We're not in much contact with any of the families. Most are under military protection and prefer to stay out of current affairs like this.

You realize that contradicts itself. "We're not in much contact" while "most are under military protection." Not that I blame them for wanting to stay uninvolved... I can't imagine recent months have been smooth for them to endure.

I'll rephrase: I'M not in much contact with them. They do got their own specialized liaisons for assistance and safety and the like, but in light of what's been happening here a quiet life is what they seem to prefer.

I hope they get what they prefer. Seeing this happen all over again, with less intent, has to be painful.

It hasn't happened yet, but I really couldn't say for sure. Anything's possible, I expect.

If we gained control over the Porter again, what happened next I imagine would depend heavily on the situation at the time. Plenty might happen by then for all we know.

Does Russia believe we're as accidental as we're told we are?

I highly doubt they do. Russia isn't big on giving us the benefit of the doubt in these matters.

Should they be? There's some degree of innate ability to want to misunderstand each other, when it comes to war... cold or otherwise. Though I have to say, the temperature around here isn't as frigid as I keep being told.

Funny, that.

I wouldn't expect them to personally, but that only adds more problems on our plate. And yours.

That's not what they mean when they call it "Cold." It means the tensions are there but no one's opened warfare.

Because the labeling means no more need to make excuses for how both sides are treading on each other's toes? It's all independent factions acting until the whole's committed... something like that?

Something like that. And open warfare is better off avoided whenever possible. War is expensive and damaging to a country.

Is the veneer of peace helping keep people satisfied? Can it hold that strong forever, when something like us has been pulled in here?

I can't see the future, sweetheart. But my guess wold be "no."
